Statement from Bishop Emeritus John R. Gaydos on Bishop McKnight's arrival

Brothers and sisters, when I first became your earthly shepherd some 20 years ago, I prayed aloud for us to truly become one flock and one shepherd in Christ, united in faith, hope and love with the faithful throughout the world and all time and eternity.

So close to the dawn of Christianity’s Third Millennium, we looked hopefully toward the horizon, opening wide the doors to Christ and to the power of His Holy Spirit to draw us back to the Father.

God has seen us through so much together over these past two decades. We have shared our stories with one another and with people who weren’t even born yet when I became your bishop.

Hope has not disappointed. We have seen His glory and are changed forever by it.

I thank God each day for you and for the privilege of living out my baptismal call among you these past two decades.

Mindful that God can never be outdone in generosity, I ask you now to join me in praying for a bountiful anointing of grace upon our new shepherd, Bishop W. Shawn McKnight.

I pledge my cooperation with him and with you as we begin, with God’s help, our next chapter together in this great adventure of salvation history.

Relying still on God’s abundant grace and the loving intercession of Mary, Mother of the Church, may we send up together a joyful “yes!” for all that is to come.

Hermanos y hermanas, cuando me convertí en su pastor terrenal hace 20 años, oré en voz alta por todos nosotros para que fuéramos un rebaño y un pastor en Cristo, unidos por la fe, esperanza y amor con todos los fieles del mundo, todo el tiempo y por la eternidad.

Tan cerca de los albores del tercer milenio de la Cristiandad, tornamos nuestra mirada con esperanza al horizonte, abriendo de par en par las puertas a Cristo y al poder de su Espíritu Santo para llevarnos de vuelta al Padre.

Dios nos ha visto juntos en estas últimas décadas. Hemos compartido nuestras historias entre nosotros y con aquellos que aún no nacían cuando fui nombrado obispo.

La esperanza no decepciona. Hemos visto su gloria y somos cambiados para siempre por ella.

Agradezco a Dios cada día por ustedes y por el privilegio de poder vivir mi llamada bautismal entre ustedes durante estas dos décadas.

Consciente de que Dios nunca puede ser superado en generosidad, les pido que me unan a mí para orar por una abundante unción de gracia sobre nuestro nuevo pastor. Obispo W. Shawn McKnight.
