United in service — Catholic Charities and our community

Encounter at Catholic Charities

Posted

A community is so much more than a collection of streets and buildings; it’s a promise we make to one another — a promise to show up, to care, and to see the profound dignity of each person.

Here in Central and Northern Missouri, Catholic Charities is how our community keeps that promise.

We are the hands that provide care, the voice that advocates for the vulnerable, and the heart that creates lasting hope.

This belief in community-powered change is exactly what drew me here, and it’s a privilege to join this work as the new Community Engagement Coordinator.

My name is Jennifer Hudson, and as of June 2, I’ve been given the wonderful opportunity to help connect the dots — linking our parishes, schools and local partners in a shared mission.

We’re not just providing aid; we’re weaving a stronger, more resilient community fabric, grounded in faith and a genuine desire to serve.

I’ve always believed that faith is best lived through action, and our local parishes are beautiful examples of this.

They are so much more than buildings; they are vibrant hubs of compassion.

That’s why I can’t wait to reconnect with them, opening new doors for parishioners to get involved.

Whether it’s stocking shelves at the food pantry or welcoming families at an outreach event, these opportunities allow us to turn faith into a tangible act of love and build the bonds that make our communities feel like home.

And this desire to serve isn’t limited by age.

One of the most inspiring things I get to see is the passion of our younger generation.

I’ve seen it firsthand with the Torch Club from the Boys & Girls Club of Jefferson City — a group of kids who regularly volunteer at our pantry, eager to lend a hand.

We see that same spirit in our partnership with Helias Catholic High School, where students learn the power of giving back through everything from landscaping work to organizing dignity drives for those experiencing homelessness.

Just recently, I was moved by a project where students put together “blessing bags” for the Room at the Inn shelter.

They filled them with essentials, but they also tucked in heartfelt, handwritten notes of encouragement — a simple gesture that brings so much comfort.

As one of their teachers told me, “Faith isn’t just for Sundays. It’s something you live every day.”

That single idea is what drives all of this.

This spirit of collaboration extends far beyond our schools and parishes.

To tackle huge challenges in our community like homelessness and food insecurity, we must work together.

We are so proud to join forces with other mission-driven partners — from food banks and healthcare clinics to shelters and civic groups.

By pooling our resources and coordinating our efforts, we can offer a circle of care that truly makes a difference.

This spring’s Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive was a perfect picture of what’s possible when we unite.

Alongside the National Letter Carriers Association, the Samaritan Center, and 61 amazing volunteers, we collected an astounding 10,700 pounds of food that stays right here in our community.

That day was a powerful demonstration of empathy in action, proving that side-by-side, we can achieve incredible things.

At the end of the day, our work is guided by a simple, profound belief: every single life is sacred.

Whether we’re helping an immigrant family reunite, providing food for a warm meal, or offering financial coaching to someone trying to get back on their feet, our mission is to serve with compassion and walk alongside each person on their journey.

The challenges are real, and the needs can feel overwhelming at times.

However, the hope we witness and the silent changes in the lives we touch are worth every ounce of effort.

Volunteering does more than just help others; it transforms us, too.

It deepens our own faith, connects us to our neighbors, and reminds us of what truly matters.

If you’re ready to be a part of something bigger, we would love to welcome you.

Whether it’s through volunteering or partnering with us on outreach initiatives, every little bit makes a difference.

Together, we can continue to provide care, create hope, and build a future rooted in dignity for all.
