This year’s Fr. Tolton Celebration Mass on April 19 drew an overflow congregation to St. John Henry Newman Church on the campus of the University of Missouri in Columbia. Father Patrick Adejoh, a missionary priest from Nigeria who ministers at the Harry S Truman Memorial Veterans’ Hospital in Columbia, preached about the hardships Missouri native Venerable Father Augustus Tolton overcame through faith in God in becoming the first recognizably Black Catholic priest in the United States. Fr. Adejoh urged everyone to imitate Fr. Tolton’s persistence in carrying out their own Christian mission in the world. (58 photos)
