Across central and northern Missouri, families in rural communities face persistent barriers to accessing healthy, nutritious food.
As the charitable arm of the Diocese of Jefferson City, Catholic Charities of Central and Northern Missouri (CCCNMO) is committed to addressing food insecurity with compassion, dignity and innovation.
While our food pantry operates out of Jefferson City, our mission reaches far beyond the capital — spanning all 38 counties within the diocese, the majority of which are rural.
These communities face a unique set of persistent challenges when it comes to accessing food — limited public transportation, few grocery stores and a heavy dependence on fixed incomes.
These conditions often create food deserts, where families must travel long, and sometimes impossible, distances to obtain affordable, nutritious food.
That’s why our response to hunger goes well beyond meal distribution.
We aim to address the root causes of food insecurity and uplift individuals and families with the resources, respect and support they need to build lasting stability.
To inform our approach for this important work, we are conducting a comprehensive community assessment.
This effort will help us uncover the specific barriers our rural neighbors face — from transportation gaps to language access and cultural considerations.
The insights we gather will directly shape our services, ensuring we meet needs in ways that are not only effective but deeply respectful of the diverse communities we serve.
One of the most impactful parts of our food security work is the client-choice model we use in our Jefferson City food pantry.
Unlike traditional pantries that distribute pre-packed boxes, our approach allows individuals and families to choose the foods that fit their health needs, cultural traditions and personal preferences, just like at a grocery store.
One client recently told me, “When I come here, I feel welcomed and treated with dignity.”
That sense of dignity is central to everything we do.
Through our SmartChoice online ordering system, nutrition education programs and senior food boxes, we aim to not just feed people but to nourish, educate and empower them.
Partnerships are key.
Through collaborations with healthcare providers like SSM Health, parishes across the diocese and local community organizations, we continue to expand access and deepen impact.
One example is the SSM Hope & Healing Food Bags program, which sends patients home from the hospital with nutritious food and connects them with ongoing support from our team.
When a local senior was discharged from MU Health Care’s Capital Region Medical Center, she returned home with more than just a new medical routine — she was now reliant on oxygen and unable to drive.
As a participant in our senior food box program, this client hoped we could help and reached out to Lisa — a staff member on our health and nutrition team — for help.
Lisa was able to help her with an SSM Hope & Healing Food Bag which she delivered in person to her home.
As the new Director of Community Services, this mission holds deep personal meaning for me.
Having worked directly with vulnerable communities for many years, I’ve seen firsthand the transformation that occurs when people are given not just help but hope and respect.
That’s what drives me — and what fuels CCCNMO’s ongoing commitment to our neighbors.
United through the strength of our parishes, the dedication of our supporters and the resilience of our neighbors, we can create a future where no one goes hungry and everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
