Aud native Sr. Mary Evelyn Lamb OSB passes away at 102 in Illinois

Osage County native Sister Mary Evelyn Lamb of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis, 102, entered eternal life on June 21, at St. Francis Convent in Springfield, Illinois.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on June 27 in the St. Clare of Assisi Adoration Chapel at St. Francis Convent, with Father Gregory Dick of the Order of Prémontré presiding and preaching the homily.

Burial was in Crucifixion Hill Cemetery.

Sr. Mary Evelyn was born on Dec. 27, 1922, in Aud, a daughter of James Earl and Hada (Mantle) Lamb.

She entered the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis on Sept. 8, 1949, and professed first vows on June 13, 1952.

She was a 1958 graduate of St. John’s Hospital School of Nursing. She also earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Quincy University (1956) and a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Sangamon State University in Springfield (1975).
Sister Mary Evelyn served in nursing at HSHS hospitals in Illinois and Wisconsin and at St. Francis Convent.

In addition, she served at Springfield & Sangamon County Community Action; Alverna Home Nursing Center in Chicago; and at Interfaith Caregivers in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where she was the assistant director.

Sr. Mary Evelyn returned to St. Francis Convent in 1995.

Preceding her in death were her parents; six brothers, Melvin Mark, James Earl II, Paul David, Dale George, Walter William, and Robert Owen; and two sisters, Earline Lucy Lamb and Franciscan Sister Jane Marie Lamb.

Surviving is a brother, Charles Joseph of Kansas City; two sisters, Franciscan Sister Jamesine Lamb of Springfield, Illinois, and Esther Brandt of Kansas City; and many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, as well as her Franciscan Sisters with whom she shared her life for over 70 years.
