Students help with Valentine’s dinner, raise funds to attend youth conference

They didn’t sing for their supper, but students at Ss. Peter & Paul parish did everything from ironing tablecloths, washing dishes, preparing and serving food, to cleaning up as they worked at the parish’s annual Valentine Dinner to earn money for their trip to the National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC).

Despite the forecast for poor weather, about 85 supporters attended the gourmet event that included a menu of stuffed mushrooms, salad, apple raisin pork steaks, Cornish game hens, oven-baked diced potatoes, and veggies.

It was capped off with chocolate-covered strawberries, “death by chocolate” cake and cheesecake. The event was held Saturday, February 10 at the Knights of Columbus.

“I was so worried about the weather,” said Dawn Kuster, Ss. Peter & Paul NCYC sponsor. “But, we’d already shopped, and so we went ahead. We figured they would make their own decisions about driving and coming to the dinner.”

And come out they did. Despite the cold weather and precipitation, nearly all the reservations were filled.

“We’re so thankful for everyone’s support,” Mrs. Kuster said.

The students will also continue their fundraising efforts by serving desserts at the parish’s Friday Lenten fish fries.

The next NCYC will be held in Washington, D.C., in November 2019.
