Print edition of The Catholic Missourian now being sent to all registered households

Effective immediately, all registered households in the Jefferson City diocese will receive the print edition of The Catholic Missourian.

The paper is published every other week, 26 times a year.

Its content is a mix of local, diocesan, national and international news and catechesis, presented from a distinctly Catholic point of view.

Bishop W. Shawn McKnight is the publisher.

Previously, Catholic households in the diocese were asked to pay an annual subscription fee to their parishes to receive the publication. The parishes were billed each summer for the number of subscriptions sent to homes in that particular parish.

In some cases, parishes found that budgetary restrictions reduced the number of subscriptions.

Beginning with the 2019-2020 budget cycle, the cost of producing and distributing the print edition is being included in the cathedraticum, an annual assessment that allows a cost-sharing of the administrative functions of the diocese.

In this way, “as one local Church, parishes of more substantial means will help provide the paper to members of parishes with financial concerns,” Bishop McKnight stated.

Parishes retain the option of asking parishioners for a special contribution to help pay for the cost of The Catholic Missourian.

Content from the print edition can also be found in The Catholic Missourian’s digital edition at cathmo.com.

Anyone who does not wish to receive the print edition can “opt out” in one of the following ways:

  • by visiting cathmo.com, clicking on the “subscribe” link in the top-right corner and following the instructions;
  • by sending an e-mail to kstegeman@diojeffcity.org. Please include the words “cancel print subscription” in the subject line and include your name and full mailing address in the e-mail;
  • by calling (573) 635-9127, ext. 246, and leaving a message, including your name and full mailing address and a return telephone number for verification.
  • by clipping the address label from the top-right corner of Page 1 of this newspaper, writing CANCEL on the back of it and mailing it to: The Catholic Missourian, P.O. Box 104900, Jefferson City, MO 65110-4900.

People who have already notified the diocese that they do not wish to receive the print edition do not have to do so again.

Anyone wishing to restore their print subscription after having cancelled it may do so in any of the ways listed above.

While the diocese is growing its digital outreach, “The Catholic Missourian has been our primary tool for evangelization since the diocese was founded,” Bishop McKnight wrote to pastors when announcing the change.

He commended the staff of The Catholic Missourian for publishing a professional and relevant diocesan paper that is an effective extension of his teaching role.

“High quality communication efforts allow our diocese to be better, together,” the bishop stated. “The Catholic Missourian, along with our digital channels, brings Catholics together in our large diocese, helping all of us become a closer community of faith.”

He noted that the newspaper received good marks in a diocesan communication audit conducted last year.

“However,” he stated, “some respondents recommended that it needs to become more accessible to younger Catholics, both in content and delivery methods.”

Bishop McKnight plans to appoint a communications advisory committee to provide ongoing recommendations for all of the diocese’s communication work, including The Catholic Missourian.
