Four to be inducted into Helias Hall of Fame Feb. 29

Four people with strong ties to the Capital City will be inducted into the Helias Hall of Fame during the Foundation for the Benefit of Helias Catholic High School’s “Celebrate the Legacy” event.

It will be held on Saturday, Feb. 29, 2020, at the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Jefferson City.

The honorees will include: Joyce E. (Schell) Amick, John D. Bryan, Louis H. Vetter and Jeremiah D. Winegar.

The honorees

Joyce E. Amick is a daughter of Donald J. and Alice L. Schell. She is married to Dale Amick. They have four children: Christopher J. Amick (Kathleen), John W. Amick (Melissa), Matthew J. Amick (Kate), and Brian J. Amick. Joyce and Dale have five grandchildren.

She graduated from Helias Catholic High School in 1968. She attended the University of Saint Mary, Leavenworth, Kansas, from 1968-1970 and earned her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1972 from the University of Missouri.

Mrs. Amick began her employment as a teacher with St. Stanislaus School 1972-74, followed by an Admissions Clerk position with Lincoln University in 1974-75. She has been working as an assistant with Dale A. Amick and Associates since 2000.

Mrs. Amick is a member of St. Peter parish in Jefferson City, where she has served on the parish council (president in 1999), past president the Home and School Association, past director of the Confirmation Team, and the Christ Renews His Parish team (2009-16).

She has been a member of the parish choir since 1991, an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion since 2000, a Perpetual Adoration participant since 1996, and member of the Ladies’ Sodality, Card Party Chairman and Welcoming Committee.

Her community involvement includes being a St. Mary’s Hospital Auxiliary member, Interparish Guadalupe Circle Member (current president), American Heart Association neighborhood collector and a University of Missouri Extension Homemakers Member (1980-95).

Mrs. Amick’s involvement with Helias Catholic High School includes being a Mother’s Club member and past president, Project Graduation committee member for several years, Golden Gala committee member, Class of 1968 Representative, and 50th Class Reunion Chairman in 2018.

She has given numerous hours over many years to the Foundation during Annual Fund Drive time.

Her continued commitment to Helias Catholic, the Jefferson City community and her parish reflects great credit upon herself and her character and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the Helias Hall of Fame.

 

John D. Bryan is a son of Wilda Lee and David Lee Bryan. He has two children: Grant Alexander Bryan and Rachel Lee Bryan.

He graduated from Jefferson City Senior High School in 1975. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from University of Missouri.

Upon graduation, Mr. Bryan moved to Dallas, Texas, where he worked for United Technologies, building semiconductors.

He is currently the executive director of the Missouri Poultry Federation, where he has worked for the last 20 years. He handles the daily operations in the federation and is its chief Missouri lobbyist, updating Missouri legislators and regulators on current happenings in Missouri’s poultry industry.

Mr. Bryan is a member of Immaculate Conception parish in Jefferson City. His community involvement includes providing turkeys for I.C.’s Thanksgiving Dinner for the Needy and donating to the Samaritan Center and Salvation Army, and serving as a Missouri State High School Activities Association’s official during the Missouri State Track & Field Championships.

He previously was involved with the University of Missouri’s Children’s Hospital, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and Habitat for Humanity.

His involvement with Helias Catholic High School includes volunteering his time and talent and a photographer for many years here at Helias. In 2015, John was awarded the James L. Rackers “Award of Excellence” for his dedication to Helias’ football, wrestling, basketball and track programs where he was a sideline photographer.

He is also the photographer for the Homecoming court and the Helias Dance Explosion.

is an example of how to serve others. He quietly, humbly, consistently and reliably shows up to provide for the photographic needs of Helias to the benefit of the school, its students and their parents. His dedication to the school and sports programs, year in and year out, without expectation of thanks or recognition is to be greatly commended.

Louis H. Vetter is a son of Francis and Anna Schrimpf Vetter. He is married to Naomi Sommerer Vetter. They have seven children: Darren Vetter, Derrick Vetter (Barbara), Gregory Vetter (Irene Kosturakis), Phillip Vetter, Tiffany Vetter (Chris Petro), Tracy Vetter (Curtis Allen) and the late Vincent Vetter (deceased Feb. 12, 2015).

Mr. and Mrs. Vetter have five grandchildren.

Mr. Vetter graduated from St. Peter High School in 1955. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in building engineering, graduating with honors in 1960 from Lincoln University in Jefferson City, and a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering, graduating with honors in 1962 from the University of Missouri.

Now retired, Mr. Vetter the cofounder and co-owner of Central Missouri Professional Services Inc., an engineering, surveying and soil-testing company.

He was also cofounder and co-owner of CMPS Development Co. Inc., which developed numerous subdivisions in Jefferson City and elsewhere in Cole County, to include the design and construction of the streets, storm-water systems and sanitary sewer systems, as well as water supplies and fire-protection systems.

Mr. Vetter is a State of Missouri retired registered Engineer, P.E., and Land Surveyor. He is also a licensed electrician in Jefferson City and currently owns and manages 26 residential rental units.

He is a member of Immaculate Conception parish in Jefferson City, where he served as an altar boy for eight years, and as a member of the Holy Name Society. He also served on the parish council and volunteered to help on numerous work parties.

He served for six years on the Jefferson City Planning and Zoning Commission, three years on the Jefferson City Parking and Traffic Committee. He previously served as president of the East Side Business Association.

His involvement with Helias Catholic High School includes two, three-year terms on the Helias School Board, where he also served as vice president and president.

He was a member of the design team for Rackers Fieldhouse and donated a complete typographic survey of the entire complex.

He donated his time and energy over the years for many work parties and construction projects. He also donated his tractor and tiller, backhoe and dump truck multiple times for various projects on campus.

 Mr. Vetter’s dedication to the betterment of his community and this school is a shining example of how one person giving their time, talent and treasure can make a lasting and positive impact on those around him and for generations to follow.

Jeremy Winegar is the son of Larry and Diane Winegar. He is married to Jill Burkett Winegar. They have four children: Maggie, Grace, Lily and Burke.

Mr. Winegar graduated from Helias Catholic High School in 1993. He attended Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville and Lincoln University in Jefferson City.

He worked in sales from 1996-2009 for Nu Way Concrete Forms Inc., and from 2009-13 he was the operations manager at Midwest Block and Brick.

From 2013-19, he was vice president of sales for Midwest Block and Brick Central/St. Louis Region and is currently the vice president of sales at Midwest Block and Brick Division for Quickrete Holdings Company.

He is a member of St. Peter parish in Jefferson City, where he has served on the school advisory board and parish council and served as the advisory liaison to the property and finance committees. He currently sits on the St. Peter Education Foundation board.

His community involvement includes four years of service on the Jefferson City Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, the executive committee of the Jefferson City Chamber of Commerce, the Missouri Concrete Association Board of Directors (products directory chairman from 2013-17), and as a member of the East Side Business Association, the Knights of Columbus and the National Concrete Masonry Association.

His involvement with Helias Catholic High School includes volunteering to work numerous events and miscellaneous needs of the school, past membership on the Helias Foundation Board of Directors, current membership on the Helias Catholic High School Advisory Board (currently as treasurer).

Mr. Winegar has also been a Youth Coach for basketball and football in the PAL Program.

He is a great example of those who go unnoticed while providing backbone support to our Helias and parochial school community.

His numerous years of volunteering at Helias Catholic, as well as helping with PAL athletics, has had an impact on many people either as athletes, parents or administrators.

The induction

The celebration will start with a 6 p.m. reception in the Capitol Plaza atrium, followed by dinner in the ballroom at 7 p.m. 

The program, including the 2020 Hall of Fame induction ceremony, will begin at 7:45 p.m.

Dancing with a live band will commence at 8:30 p.m.

This Celebrate the Legacy event is geared toward honoring members of the Helias Catholic community while raising money to support the endowment and thus help keep tuition low. 

This celebration will highlight various aspects of the Helias educational experience in order to make the community aware of the benefits of a Helias Catholic education.

New members are inducted into the Helias Hall of Fame each year. Individuals must have graduated at least 20 years prior to induction; demonstrated loyalty and service to Helias; distinguished him or herself in a chosen field; and have exhibited moral standards to the credit of the school.

Tickets are $50 per person.
